Local counselor wins Colin Powell Award

Brig. Gen. Bryan Roberts, Deputy Commanding General, USAREC presents Mrs. Semelsberger, Conemaugh Valley High School, Johnstown Pa with the Colin Powell Award for outstanding support of the US Military in her school.

Mrs. Laurie Semelsberger, Guidance Counselor at Conemaugh Valley High School, Johnstown Pa. was awarded the General Colin Powell Award for her support of young adults desiring to serve in the U.S. Armed Forces following graduation.   This award was presented at the 2nd Annual “Our Community Salutes of Pittsburgh” event held at PNC Park on April 27, 2011.  Brig. Gen. Bryan Roberts presented her with with prestigious award. 

Semelsberger was nominated by local Soldier, Sgt. 1st. Class Wagner, Johnstown Recruiting Station.  “Ms. Semelsberger, readily assists recruiters by helping to coordinate/facilitate student and school access for classroom presentations, ASVAB promotions, posttest interpretations, etc; she was instrumental in setting up class-wide ASVAB testing for the entire junior class; assists recruiter’s Future Soldier programs; fully supports the school’s three Future Soldiers’s, ensures recruiters have timely access to school letters and transcripts, and checks FS records quarterly to ensure they are on track to graduate and she actively refers students considering military service to recruiters.” stated Wagner on his nomination form.

Mrs. Semelsberger attened college University of Pittsburgh, and graduated with a M.Ed from Indiana University of PA.  She holds many volunteer positions as in her school as well including; Senior Advisor Alternative Education Counselor, Dual Enrollment Coordinator, Homebound Program Facilitator, Challenge Program Coordinator, School-To-Work Coordinator, Student Assistance Team Member, SAP District Council Liaison, Safe and Drug Free Scools District Coordinator, Admiral Peary Counselors Association, and Pennsylvania Association of Secondary School Counselors. She holds awards for Outstanding Young Women of America award, Who’s Who Among America Teachers, Congressional Youth Leadership Council Outstanding Service Award and Lion’s Club Service Award.
